Statistics
DUI prevention remains a priority at the Maricopa County Attorney's Office as evidenced by the specialized Vehicular Crimes Bureau, which prosecutes a majority of aggravated DUI cases. Nationally in 2007, an estimated 12,998 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. Thirty-two states had decreases in the number of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in 2007, as compared to 2006. Among the states, California had the largest decrease in the nation and Arizona the third largest decrease. In Arizona in 2006, there were 7,693 alcohol-related crashes. Drinking drivers were involved in 5.49% of all crashes. Drinking drivers were involved in 23.73% of all fatal crashes.
