Statistics

DUI prevention remains a priority at the Maricopa County Attorney's Office as evidenced by the specialized Vehicular Crimes Bureau, which prosecutes a majority of aggravated DUI cases.  On average, 72% of the Bureau sentences result in prison time with an average sentence length of approximately 5 years. Nationally in 2006, an estimated 17,602 people were killed in alcohol related motor vehicle traffic crashes - essentially unchanged from the 17,590 alcohol-related fatalities in 2005. In Arizona in 2006, there were 7,693 alcohol-related crashes. Drinking drivers were involved in 5.49% of all crashes. Drinking drivers were involved in 23.73% of all fatal crashes.
